Oak
Quercus robur is commonly known as the Pedunculate oak or English oak. It is native most of Europe. Oak can live for over a thousand years which is common in Slavonia, eastern region of Croatia. It is planted for forestry, and produces a long-lasting and durable heartwood, much in demand for interior and furniture work. Oak is the most popular wood for flooring and furniture in Europe. The grain of the wood is long and straight. The wood is hard and has a pale brown tone that becomes more a yellow amber colour over time.
Wines that fermented and aged in medium-toasted Croatian barrique barrels made from Quercus petrea and Quercus robur oak wood influenced the specific change of the aroma structure. From the organoleptic point of view the study suggested that fermentation and on the lees ageing production method in Croatian oak barrels positively influenced the quality of wines. The best results were achieved by use of Quercus petrea oak wood.
